50 Mile Endurance Run

Run-day Instructions

Directions

The  Diablo 50 Mile Endurance Run will start at 6:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 20th at Mitchell Canyon Trailhead.  Click on this Map for driving directions.  Park entrance fee is $2 per vehicle.

Lodging

Please click on Hotels & Motels for a partial listing of places to stay.  Although there is camping within the Mount Diablo State Park, the gates are closed overnight and there is no access to the start area at Mitchell Canyon Trailhead.

Course

The course will be marked with pink ribbon approximately every 1/4 mile.  There will be at least two blue-striped ribbons before a turn in the course.  The blue-striped ribbons will be placed before and on the same side as the required turn.  After you complete the turn, there will be pink ribbons indicating the correct route.   Pink glowsticks will be hung starting at the Juniper aid station (mile 41).

If you don't see a pink ribbon or a glowstick for 10 minutes, you are off course.  One of the few rules of trail running is that, if you get off course, you must retrace your path until you find where you left the course and then continue along the marked course.  Failure to follow this rule may result in disqualification even though you may have traveled a greater distance than the official course.

The North Peak and Zippe trails from mile 45 to 47 are very technical with loose rock.  Please be extremely careful through this short section!

Many will finish in the dark.  Please plan on carrying a flashlight and a backup light on the final 9-mile section.

No dogs allowed on the course.

Please click on  Course Map for a topographical map.  Course maps will also be available at runner check-in on Saturday morning.

Elevation Gain 13,850 feet  (Elevation changes determined using an Avocet altimeter.)

Aid Stations

Fully-stocked aid stations every 3.1 - 9.6 miles.  You can expect fresh fruit, salty snacks, assorted candy, Clif Bars, Clif Shots, boiled potatoes & salt, water, and Conquest sports drink.  However, it is mandatory that runners carry at least one water bottle and highly recommended to carry two.
