About Us

After many years of running road marathons, Wendell and Sarah started running trail ultramarathons in the early 90s.  Since then, Wendell and Sarah have, between them, completed many well-known trail ultras, including Western States, Hardrock, Angeles Crest, Vermont 100, and Javelina, as well as competing in non-trail ultras, like Badwater and the Across the Years multi-day event.  In addition, they enjoy planning family vacations with their son, Aaron, that include non-organized ultra events, like the Winter Western States, Badwater-to-Whitney-summit, John Muir Trail, Sierra to the Sea, and traversing the 165-mile Tahoe Rim Trail.

In early 2000, Wendell suggested using their combined ultra experience to organize an event on Mt. Diablo, their ‘backyard’ training ground.  That fall was the inaugural Mt. Diablo Fall Trail Run, the first Pacific Coast Trail Runs event ever.

In the years since, PCTR has hosted over 100 events for more than 25,000 runners.  Although the schedule now includes over 20 trail runs and a few ‘races’ (San Francisco One Day, Lake Merritt Half Day, Diablo Marathon & 50 Mile Endurance Run, and the Headlands Hundred and 50 Mile Endurance Run), the goal of every PCTR event is the same as it was at that very first run back in 2000 – to provide a supportive environment in beautiful surroundings at which runners can meet their personal goals and feel a real sense of achievement.

And, speaking of personal achievement, the entire family was most proud when Aaron completed his first ultramarathon in October of 2006 at the San Francisco One Day at the age of 11.  You can read his personal narrative about that experience at SF One Day - Aaron.
